Three Legit Self-Help Books to Read This Summer

I know I know, I see you cringing about "self-help." But these three books (all written by amazing lady bosses) are sure to get you on your feet and improving your life…

How to Get S*** Done by Erin Falconer

In the first part of this book, Erin takes us to her lowest point all the way to how she got to write this book. Some of the things she went through to be an author were actually unbelievable. She also brings your attention to all the activities you cram into one day and begs the question if these things are in alignment with what you want in life. Emotional labor is a huge topic as well, which is something that I have never really thought much of.

She helps you pick three goals to work on-- personal, relationship, and work based. She asks you to track your time for a week to see where your time is actually going. WOOF. That was a tough one for me. She helps you not judge yourself so hard, and instead, make a game plan for how you can work every single week to approach and achieve these goals. She also gives solid reasons for why outsourcing can be necessary and how much time that frees up. This book helped me get clear on what exactly I want and how I can make actionable plans to get closer to the life I dream of. Time really is our most valuable resource!!!

Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis

In this book, Rachel Hollis brings us through 20 lies that she, at one time or another, believed about herself. Some of these felt so real that I thought she was in my head! A couple of these lies include "I'll start tomorrow." “No is the final answer." "I'm a terrible writer"

Rachel Hollis is totally raw and honest in this book and writes it directly to the reader, which was quite refreshing. She literally self published her own book before it was cool, because everyone else told her no. This is her 8th book. Now THAT is someone that I want to hear tell me about life. It felt like a personal coach was talking to me and saying, Hey! Look at me! See what I went through?! You can too! I feel like this book helped me realize that other women often think/feel the a lot of same ways about things that I do. I’m not alone after all! The other thing I loved about this book is that at the end of each chapter, Rachel actually numbers a couple things that helped her work through each lie. I undoubtedly will be working through many of the lies that I believe about myself after reading this one.

You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero

Truth be told, I’m only halfway through this one, but I’m already hooked. I know I’m a little late to the party, as this book has already been on my “to read” list for a HOT minute, but better late than never. She starts the book letting us all know why we believe such weird things about ourselves that hold us back time after time. AKA the difference between our conscious and subconscious mind. She gives examples of excuses that we make and why we make them. I have been raising my hand the whole time!!! She also talks a lot about how faith and taking action work together for amazing, mind-blowing things to happen to you.

The whole book is a huge wake up on getting honest with yourself about what your actual calling is and why you aren’t doing it yet. If you’re biggest question right now is “what is my life’s purpose?” This book might be a good place to start.
